Making Up Words

Who does it? How do you justify it? Do you make up chat words only, or are you willing to toss out queries with questionable terms included? I definitely leave words in my manuscript that are frowned upon by Word and my dictionary. Examples from today: "should've" and "reattuned." Curse you, red squiggles!

I used the word empath an a noun in my ms. It was used on Star Trek therefore it must exist, right?

Wrong.

I think a day or two ago, I tried to make an "ence" noun from an "ent" adjective. I'd always assumed it existed - much like "persistence" - so when I found out otherwise, I added it to my dictionary; some words should exist, and who am I to deny them?!
